Arsenal to swoop for Wales Captain

According to the Guardian, Arsenal are planning to make a bid for Swansea’s centre-back, Ashley Williams, after Wenger has finally lost faith in his central defenders following a string of defensive mistakes that have cost Arsenal dearly this season.

Wenger had hoped that Vermaelen, a stand out player for Arsenal over the past few seasons despite his injuries, and the German, Per Mertesacker who has 86 caps for Germany, would be able to organise themselves and their line, bringing back the defensive-know-how that Arsenal were once famous for.

Sitting someway off the top-four with 10 games to go, a lot of the responsibility lies in the defensive half of the team, although by no means all of it with poor finishing and a lack of incisive final balls to blame as well.

With fans rage and Wenger’s patience pushed to the limit, it is reportedly time that enough is enough, and Arsenal will endeavour to make a bid in the region of £8m for Williams, who will have 2-years left on his contract this summer.

The Swansea man lead his side to Capital One Cup glory this season, after being at the Swans for five years now.

At 28 it is hoped he has the experience and British passion that Wenger is now seeking to solve his teams issues.

It is thought however, Arsenal will face competition from his ex-manager, Brendan Rodgers, who has named Williams as one of Liverpool’s priority targets for the window ahead as well.
