Arsenal are now in the lead to sign centre-back, Angelo Ogbonna, who has also been linked with Manchester United and Liverpool.
The 24-year-old Italian International was expected to be extending his contact with his current side Torino, but the widespread interest from some of England’s top sides has caused him to put a halt on any new negotiations.
For a while he was believed to be targeted by Sir Alex as the long-term replacement for Nemanja Vidic whose career at United has been blighted by injury, with their boss admitting that the Ferdinand and Vidic era had come to end.
With Wenger being given a record transfer budget of £70m, rumoured to have been available in January as well, the Arsenal manager is thought to have decided with the board it is time to spend; on the right players. And as we all know, Arsene is quite against the January window. Hopefully he’s got a fair few, quality transfers in store this summer.
Sources in Italy, including the newspaper La Stampa, have claimed that a fee of about £15.5m would be enough to bring Ogbonna to the Emirates, although we are all too familiar with Arsenal’s bargain striking attitude so no doubt they will try to bring this figure down.
Arsenal have also been strongly linked with Atletico Bilbao centre-back, Fernando Amorebieta, whose agent claims to have held talks with Arsenal over a free transfer in the summer with the Spaniards contract up, and the player unwilling to renew it.
It’s unclear whether Arsenal intend to bring in both of these players, or one of them, or if they are just assessing their options ahead of a busy summer.
