Rumours have been circulating that when the summer comes, Bacary Sagna could be on his way. These were always going to be inevitable with the right-back to have just one year left on his current contract. But come the summer Sagna will be 30, is a move away the right decision for Arsenal who without Sagna have just one, promising yet young right-back?
PSG are the reported team holding an interest, and have done so throughout January, with French newspapers claiming them to be lining up a move for the two-time PFA right-back of the year, in the summer.
Sagna himself has moved to dismiss these rumours however, stating that ” I am 100 per cent devoted to my club” and reaffirming that he will see out his contract.
“I am only thinking about defending the colours of Arsenal until the end of my contract.
“The fans are angry with me because they heard about PSG’s interest, but I am not responsible for that. I have never had any contact.”
As the man himself says, he wasn’t responsible. But at the end of the day can you really believe what players have to say? Many say they will stay in some form, but this doesn’t always come up to be the case. On the other hand, Sagna deserves respect, he has been a great defender in a commonly dodgy back-four and has devoted much of his career to Arsenal.
A move away might be his last chance for success? Or will he be more successful at Arsenal. He claims his main goal is to win something with Arsenal. Nonetheless, we will see if he agrees a contract extension, but if it’s just one-year as Wenger tends to do at that age, I can’t see him staying.
Should he leave, who will play at right-back?
Jenkinson is no doubt Wenger’s right-back for the future, but Sagna has been a loyal, quality defender for Arsenal for a while now, despite a run of bad form, surely he deserves the benefit of the doubt? I can’t see Wenger buying someone of Sagna’s quality and experience (especially in the Premier League), so will we end up with an inexperienced defender, another position not quite up to scratch.
I think it would fuel the fires further, it seems we always have a couple of positions in need of improving at once, and this will go a long way to ensuring that.
What do you want to happen? What do you think will happen? Your guess is as good as mine.
